Right now I am just anxious about school ending and the summer to begin. We only have one more week of class before finals, and I am seriously stressin but all the while looking forward to this closure of the semester. After this year I think I am not going to get my PhD.... at least not for a while, when I do not have to work to survive and go to school at the same time. But back to that, I have school work to do since we are fininshing up.

Health in our world

Yesterday in class we discussed health and education. Through that we thought of some interesting classes which i have not thought about for a while, Bill Nye, and the Magic School Bus... oh Ms. Frizzle. But we also addressed health discussed in modern entertainment, such as Sex and the City. Not only do i personally love this show, but it discusses health issues constantly, whether it is mental health and stablity, or other health issues such as condom use, STI testing, addiction, pregnancy or other sexual functions, even breast and testicular cancer, all while these women live their normal lives... trying to do exercise in other forms, whether running, dancing, or yoga these women are teaching us things. They are at least getting girls to think about something other than pleasing other boys, they are pleasing themselves. It is important to show that these women are not perfect, do not live perfect lives, do not all have healthy and perfect habits, but they are strong women who are the women they are supposed to be.

Changing technology

I was really interested last class when on our video they had a child psychologist talk about how they see tons of patients with ADD or ADHD seeking medication because they can not stay still or pay attention, meanwhile they can play video games for hours on end. This shows two things, that we are doing something terribly wrong with raising our children and they play too much games or that we need to jump on it and make those games educational and beneficial. I personally do not know which way we should go with this. I feel that it is great that the health world is going beyond "Operation" and having realistic surgery games and video games for cancer patients that are actually fighting and beating cancer. That is exciting and if it gives children hope and make them feel better than great, but for the average child that sits on their ass all day and plays video games, I do not necessarily think that they should be given more games that are better (health and educationally wise). They need to get outside, enjoy the air and stop being raised as pansies.

This past class we watched part of the third section of the series Killing me Softly by Jean Kilbourne, which anyone who knows me would know that I LOVED it. It is all about how society views women and causes us to have a distorted view about how we should look and even act (submissive). We are raising men in a society that condones rape and abusing women since we are only objects anyway, even to the extent that advertising makes little girls look sexy.... THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT!!! errr.... on another note it is interesting to see the health advertising out there and how companies like Trojan are being very creative to get their message across.. for them to make money, but for society as protection against STDs and pregnacy.
